Hunter Courses: Schedule

(XCI101-HP)

CI: ENERGY, THERMAL VALUE, FIRE PERFORMANCE AND MOISTURE SOLUTIONS

Description:

This presentation will focus on the changing energy codes and how they affect commercial wall assemblies. The somewhat confusing concept of continuous insulation (CI) and how it is used throughout the codes will be discussed at length. The NFPA 285 fire test and its role in code-compliant wall assemblies will also be discussed for commercial building types 1–4. There are many types of insulation that can be used in commercial wall assemblies. We will discuss polyisocyanurate insulation’s thermal performance, physical properties, and compliance attributes, and how polyiso compares with other types of insulation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the advancement of National Model Energy Codes as they relate to the energy efficiency of the building envelope.

  2. Define and understand “continuous insulation” and how its use affects energy code compliance, current ASHRAE standards, LEED, and the International Energy Conservation Code.

  3. Understand the NFPA 285 fire test and its role in code compliant wall assemblies.

  4. Understand the benefits or various materials that are commonly used for CI.

CI: CODE COMPLIANCE AND THE NFPA 285 IN COMMERCIAL WALL ASSEMBLIES

Description:

A discussion of the NFPA 285 test and how it relates to CI products in exterior wall applications.

Learning Objectives:

  1. What are common concerns encountered with NFPA 285 assembly design and installation?

  2. What are the advantages and challenges of CI board products in NFPA 285 assemblies?

  3. What is the NFPA 285 Fire Test and why is it so important?

  4. What are the different types of CI options that offer NFPA 285 compliance?

Education Content: Advanced

CI: ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND PERFORMANCE COMPARISON OF CI

Description:

Participants will learn about the evolution of continuous insulation, sustainability attributes, installation factors, air and water performance, and new ideas for simplified exterior wall designs incorporating CI.

Learning Objectives:

  1. How and why have insulation materials evolved over time?

  2. What are some sustainability attributes of various types of CI products?

  3. What are major factors that impact installation of CI?

  4. How does air and water performance compare for fibrous vs. foam insulations?
